"Last year, Shelley Engel, Tabatha Herzel and Tara Schyer
took our tuckshop from a poorly run, wasteful tuckshop and
have not only turned it into a healthy and popular option
for our kids, but it turns a profit for the school of over
$8000 per year.
"They have worked tirelessly to ensure that all food
is organic, allergy friendly, healthy and appealing to the
kids.
"They organised a pre-order by term system that allows
parents to work out what they want a term in advance. We have
no waste because we know exactly what is required and the
children love their freshly prepared food.
"We often watch these ladies dragging in bags of fresh
ingredients to make food that they could just buy off the
shelf, but they insist on making it fresh so that they know
what is in it and that it is as fresh as possible.
"On a Tuesday, we have sushi orders delivered to the
children from kinder to year 2 with a window service for the
primary children. They enjoy everything from frozen pineapple
pieces to popcorn - both of which are very popular sellers.
"On Thursdays, our children eat from a choice of two
main dishes, a fruit salad item and either a juice or a milk
option. This is complemented by a homemade dairy free muffin
which is very popular. Again our children can come for window
service which is lots of fun.
"Most of the main dishes cost $3 which is very affordable
for the majority of our families.
"Our teachers are also regularly ordering from our tuckshop
because it is such an appealing and easy option for them.
"The majority of the containers used to serve our food
are either made from recycled materials or can be recycled
after use. The children across this campus are conscious of
how to recycle and are encouraged by our teaching staff to
do so. Fruit and vegetable scraps from the canteen go into
our active composting bins which are the responsibility of
our students.
"We have extended our tuckshop to be a service at our
annual junior sports day. The children pre-order sushi rolls
which are available for them to enjoy at lunchtime. We bring
the non-perishable items to sports day to sell during the
break and again, the kids really enjoy them.
"The ladies built a thriving business for us from scratch.
It is a service that is treasured by our community. We are
never short of volunteers to run it due to the joy our parents
get from serving their children. The children are always so
proud when it is their parent in the tuckshop. I believe these
ladies are very deserving of this award as it recognises their
dedication and commitment to the success of this wonderful
initiative which has provided so much benefit to our school
community."
