Julie Webb, Canteen Assistant

"I would like to nominate our canteen for two awards, the canteen manager and the canteen assistant.

"Our canteen is organised by two ladies: Helen Blainey (manager) and Penny West (assistant). They have worked together for several years.

"Volunteers are welcomed and made to feel at ease, especially when you have had no experience in which it can be very daunting, but not when you come to 'Crusoe'. From the very beginning, they direct and assist you all the way through. You are never left alone, until you are ready. I should know. I started off as a volunteer, I was extremely nervous to serve such a large number of students. But working with these ladies, I now have the confidence to learn more and now I am employed there.

"Nothing is too much for these ladies. They go out of their way to make sure everyone enjoys their lunch. When you look at the menus, you'll be able to see why (see attached). There are also things that are not even on the menu eg. homemade curry and rice which is one of the ladies' grandmother's recipes.

"Some of the food, eg pasta sauce, is to be tasted prior to being allowed to be sold, to make sure it is 'perfect'. Homemade soups are started from scratch and differ from week to week. Their pasties are so delicious that every week they get orders from staff to take home. Each order is carefully placed on foil trays, decorated with parsley and wrapped.

"If you wish to alter an item on the menu to suit your taste, there is no hesitation, as long as you are satisfied.

"If a child has no lunch for some reason, that is not an issue - there will always be something there for that child, and they are not made to feel embarrassed.

"These ladies do so much more. They do catering for special functions that the school puts on eg. deb balls, 2 course dinners for all teachers when they have teacher interviews, and meetings. Nothing is too much. From salads to club sandwiches, the list is endless.

"Recently the canteen has moved and we are "over the moon" with the whole design. We have everything which we could have asked for, including all stainless steel work benches, two stoves, even a dishwasher. Everything is so spacious; we even have our own work space. There are even windows all around which lightens the atmosphere.

"We have such wonderful times working together. I look forward to going to work each day. We share each other's events from day to day. The laughter we have together never stops working with such people. The atmosphere is so rewarding and it is such an enjoyable work place.

"In summary, I believe both manager Helen and assistant Penny deserve these awards, as both of them demonstrate continuously their strong work ethic and positive attitudes. They are both great assets to not only the canteen environment, but the entire school."

- Julie Webb, Canteen Assistant

"These wonderful canteen ladies keep the starving students and staff of our college at bay with healthy, scrumptious and delicious food. They are also quite adept at providing catering for visitors and guests at the college."
