Primary Canteen Manager of the Year (Paid)

Award received:

Highly Commended

Entrant:

Jodi John

School:

Bell Park North Primary School

Enrolment:

Canteen open:

3 days days per week - Wednesday, Thursday, Friday

Nominated by:

Sue Williams, 5/6 Teacher; Welfare Co-ordinator

"Jodi runs our school canteen for 3 days a week and she has worked diligently to keep the canteen open.

"As we are a small school, it has become increasingly difficult to break even and, in fact, the canteen has run at a loss over the past couple of years.

"In order to cut costs and provide a healthy menu, Jodi cooks recess snacks and some lunch menus and offers children fresh food daily.

"She is always trialling new ideas and she presents food in fun and attractive ways to entice the children to try new things. The children at our school are now more willing to explore new tastes and make healthy choices. We received our Healthy Eating School accreditation in 2009.

"She has been a strong advocate for healthy eating and as a past member of the fundraising committee and a current School Councillor, she has campaigned to have fundraising activities that reflect the healthy canteen and food services policies and promote healthy lifestyle messages (eg. sunscreen sales, walk-a-thons).

"Jodi also saw the need to offer breakfast to the children at our school. She actively sought community support and she sourced grants and participated in fundraising to make this a reality. She now runs a breakfast program 2 days a week and she volunteers her time on one of these days. (See attached photos)

"Jodi also supports other school initiatives and programs.

"She assists the senior school with their mini fete fundraiser by helping the children cook on the day.

"This year she also helped children with their Health and Well Being Expo exhibits.

"She supports the school with their Nude Food policy by ensuring that any packaged foods are transferred to reusable containers.

"Jodi also gets into the spirit of all school fundraisers and special dress up days. She makes snacks to reflect the theme and has special lunches. (See attached photos of Footy Colour Day)

"Her attention to cleanliness and good food handling are exemplary. She scored A for the recent Health Inspection.

"We consider ourselves to be extremely lucky to have someone of Jodi's commitment and expertise working for the good of the children at our school.

"Our canteen is open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

"Jodi (our canteen manager) operates it and she sometimes has volunteers to help (we are finding it difficult to get help on a daily basis).

"Our breakfast program is on Monday and Thursday. Jodi gives her time voluntarily on Monday.

"We are extremely proud of our canteen. Jodi has worked tirelessly to ensure all Healthy Eating School and DEECD guidelines are met and the school canteen runs as efficiently as possible (although we continue to run at a loss)."

- Sue Williams, 5/6 Teacher; Welfare Co-ordinator

"I strongly support this nomination & Jodi for her efforts in the canteen and strong support of all school activities."

- Anthea Lagadinos, Principal

"Canteen: Pizza no longer available! Why not try Jodi's yummy home-made sausage rolls? At only $2.20 each they are perfect on a cold day!"

- Bell Park North Primary School Newsletter, Number 16, 3rd June 2010

"Last Sunday the Rebels Motorcycle Club held a sausage sizzle to help raise money for our school's breakfast program.

"The day was a huge success and well supported. All funds raised during this time were given to our school for the breakfast program. This was a total of $1,100.00.

"We would like to thank ALL the people involved in organising the barbeque and all the members of the club for their generous donation. A big thank you to the parents and staff members who were able to attend."

- Bell Park North Primary School Newsletter, Number 16, 3rd June 2010

"Thank you to Nardi Produce, 24 Thompson Rd, North Geelong, who are donating a box of fresh fruit and other products each week to our Breakfast Program. Please support this local business."
