"I wish to nominate the Nhill College Canteen for the Innovation
Award - Best P-12 School Canteen Idea of 2009.
"As canteen manager, I have employed the VCAL (Victorian
Certificate of Applied Learning) students to help prepare
items for sale in the canteen. To do this, the VCAL students
have obtained their 'working with food certificate'.
"During the winter months, VCAL students make hearty
homemade soup, working independently in the cooking room.
They work on a roster system co-ordinated by themselves and
their teacher, and choose their own recipes. We have found
Chicken and Corn, and Pumpkin to be the best sellers.
"Four VCAL girls have made low fat muffins all year
to sell at the canteen, again working independently in the
cooking room. They cook the muffins and we sell them warm
from the pie warmer at recess on cold winter days, then wrap
the remaining muffins individually for sale at lunch.
"Making soup and muffins available adds variety and
interest to the canteen menu proving popular with both staff
and students.
"The VCAL students have also been a great help to me
on days I have been asked to cater for a school function,
they are always willing to help with food preparation and
work to a high standard."
- Bronwyn Schneider, Canteen Manager
