"This year I have focussed my idea on families.
With volunteer numbers dropping away in all school canteens,
I have been looking at ways of making the canteen more child
friendly. We have always had the large box of toys to amuse
them but that's not suitable to the very small children.
I have purchased a High Chair and Portable Cot for the canteen.
The little ones are happier if they are sitting up on a higher
level where they can see mum and everything else that's going
on. And then there's the cot if they need to have a sleep.
For health reasons, I ask if parents could bring their own
sheets and I have a spray bottle of sanitiser to clean them
afterwards. This is also a safe option so small children are
not under your feet when busy serving. A regular mum whose
new bub is now up to the high chair age was very appreciative
of this and I am hoping that next term it may encourage more
mums to come in to volunteer."
