"As another means of getting students involved in their school
environment, and utilising the canteen as an educational resource,
we have introduced 'The Canteen Monitor Program'.
Year Six students take turns helping in the canteen once
a week with collating orders, counting money, bagging orders,
and cleaning and clearing up. They get to see first hand how
the food is prepared and served, and learn vital skills about
safe food and utensil handling, good hygiene practices, safety
in the kitchen, and the importance of establishing and maintaining
a balanced and nutritious diet.
The program is aimed at supporting and complementing what
the children learn in the classroom about personal development
and health by encouraging a positive attitude towards leading
a healthy, active lifestyle through learning about how good
food can contribute to this. Teamwork and communication are
also important skills that are enhanced, as well as the ability
to work individually on a given task or under the supervision
of the canteen manager.
Students also learn about pricing, stock management, nutrition
guidelines, and what the canteen manager's role entails. The
'Go for Your Life Healthy Canteen Kit - Student Learning Activities'
will eventually be used in the classroom to complement the
canteen visits as the program progresses.
The students are rewarded with food vouchers and a certificate
acknowledging their contribution to the operation of the school
canteen, highlighting the skills and knowledge they have gained
from the experience.
We believe this program helps build on a school culture where
students are encouraged to make good food choices. It also
acknowledges the canteen as an integral part of the school
environment by presenting it as an exciting and practical
classroom where the students actively help in maintaining
a healthy food service for everyone."
