"As Canteen Manager, I am always thinking and researching
the internet and canteen magazines for new ideas to improve
what we are already doing here at Yarrawonga Primary School.
We have extended our Healthy Heart Tuesdays to now include
Wednesday and Thursday [see Yarrawonga Primary School's 2007
nomination for VSCA "Most Improved" Primary Canteen of the
Year].
With the variety of fruit that we sell and all the baking
of alternative fresh and healthy snacks, we are able to offer
these to the children instead of the packaged snacks that
are full of preservatives etc. There is nothing better than
the smell of the fresh popcorn popping just before recess
or the tray of freshly baked apple or banana muffins and the
taste of the wholemeal pancakes served still warm. A lot of
children don't get the home cooking.
If time permits, Sharon and I cook something for Mondays
and any extras on the days are frozen and used on Fridays.
The only packaged food we now sell are Vege Chips, Rice Sticks
and Jumpys. They are only sold at selected times and days.
We have been trialling this for the duration of term three
and financially it is looking better than it did at the end
of term two.
At the end of last year, we ran at a loss and it will be
interesting to see the financial results at the end of this
year; not forgetting we are there as a service to the children
and not to make a fortune.
There is more profit in the home cooking and it is better
for our children."
