"In 2007 our menu was your typical canteen menu, including
pies, sausage rolls, hot dogs and oven heated deep fried hash
browns and chicken nuggets etc.
The School Council was determined to improve the health of
our menu and therefore our children, and this was a high priority
in their search for a new canteen manager.
Linda Day (our new canteen manager) started 2008 with a completely
new menu which is not only low in fats and sugars, but also
high in nutrition and low in additives and preservatives.
We achieve this by making most of our menu on site, to Linda's
'get as many veggies in as you can' recipes.
The kids still love their pizzas - but now they are made
fresh to order with wholemeal pita bread and low fat cheese.
Fried rice, honey-soy chicken drumsticks, spaghetti bolognaise
and burgers are all made on site.
We are lucky enough to be supplied with sushi made fresh
to order each canteen day, from a local restaurant. Tuna sushi
is popular with both students and staff.
We've had a few parents asking when hot dogs will be back,
but even the harshest critics seem to have come to love the
new menu.
We actually have more parents asking for recipes, which has
led Linda to produce our own canteen recipe book, which will
be presented to parent helpers in appreciation of their hard
work."

"The canteen at Orchard Grove Primary School is a great asset
to the school. On Mondays and Fridays, students place their
orders in the class's lunch tub, which is sent to the canteen.
The tub comes back at lunchtime, jam-packed with delicious
food.
Our canteen previously sold pies, hotdogs, dim-sims, and
a whole heap of other unhealthy food items, 'junk food'. Now
we have healthy things like - wholemeal sandwiches, sushi,
salads, fried rice, juice, and much more. There is a huge
variety of food items that are good quality and really yummy!
Orchard Grove's community believe physical health and nutrition
are important. Therefore, we take pride in our canteen for
making a turn around. Personally, I think that having fresh
food in the 2008 VSCA Canteen of the Year Awards Nomination
Category (D) "Most Improved" Primary Canteen of the Year Orchard
Grove Primary School canteen is a great idea. I love healthy
food and I've never been a fan of the cheap, microwaved stuff
the canteen used to dish out.
I am truly grateful for having a canteen that has good quality
food, prepared by friendly volunteers and a great manageress."

"Having a canteen is not a right, it's a privilege and here
at Orchard Grove we are all very grateful to have such a wonderful
canteen.
Over the years our school has recognised the importance of
healthy food and as a result our menu has changed dramatically.
It now offers a magnificent and healthy and tasty range of
healthy snacks for lunch.
Last year, it had many processed, deep fried and fatty foods,
like pizzas, pies, sausages. Now our canteen serves honey
soy drumsticks, fried rice, spaghetti, and homemade beef burgers
instead of terrible, fatty hot dogs. We now have sandwiches
with basically any fillings, lovely salads and fresh sushi
instead of deep fried nuggets, hash browns and dim-sims. In
our snack section, we have veggies and dips, rice crackers
and cheese, fruit smoothies and 100% fruit juice and much
more.
Our canteen is open on every Monday and Friday and run by
our clever manageress/cook Linda Day and a group of parent
volunteers. The canteen may be quite small and not open all
of the time but to us kids it's just perfect. The food is
always freshly prepared and tastes better than ever. But best
of all, it's OUR healthy canteen and we greatly appreciate
the changes."
