"Eighteen months ago our canteen was struggling, with a dull
and boring menu which was far from nutritious, but geared
at generating additional funds for the school. Our school
is a large school with a student population of over 600 students,
and still we were not generating anywhere near the business
we should have been, nor was the canteen seen as a place which
educated the students about healthy eating and tasty nutritious
food. Towards the end of its life, even the volunteers were
fast losing interest.
Then along came Carolyn, a parent, who had experience in
hospitality and a real passion for good food and a love of
our school. What a combination! We approached Carolyn with
the challenge of resurrecting and revamping our entire canteen
and the way we operated and with trying to keep us at least
breaking even with the costs.
Carolyn took this challenge in both hands and has exceeded
our expectations in every area.
Our canteen menu has the most extensive menu I have ever
seen for a primary school; it is healthy, appetising and nutritious.
Carolyn has involved the children in working in the canteen
as well as the parents, and has inspired them to re-establish
our vegetable garden and establish a herb garden. The children
see firsthand the produce from the garden being transformed
into tasty delicious soups, muffins, and garnish for foccacias.
Our canteen is extremely popular amongst students and teachers
never fail to order their lunches on canteen day, this is
a first for our school!!
Carolyn works with our whole school community, parents, teachers
and children, on educating them about good food, and providing
them with food which is healthy and appetising. Our canteen
has never looked better, and is a highlight of our school.
This would not have happened without the hard work and dedication
of our wonderful canteen Manager Carolyn who has given hours
and hours to our school to benefit our children; we love her,
and will be forever grateful for her work and Carolyn deserves
this recognition."
