"Cheryl Savage is an outstanding and valued member of our
school community for many reasons. There are the obvious references
to the numerous menu changes she has made to offer a truly
healthy range of food for the children.
Over and above all of this is a capacity which Cheryl has
brought to our school in terms of her constant fundraising
for charitable causes. [Cheryl leases the canteen at Anderson's
Creek Primary School.] Each year she offers a special lunch
and donates all of the profit to the Variety Club so that
a child will receive a new bike for Christmas. If there is
a shortfall in takings, then Cheryl makes good the difference
to ensure that the target is met.
A dedicated Collingwood supporter, Cheryl provides a footy
lunch around Finals time each year and, again, donates the
profits to charity. Even within the school Cheryl has had
an impact. When we were struggling to find funds for tree
planting, Cheryl donated several trees which the children
could then plant. Each year we ask our Grade 6 children to
create something to leave with us as a tribute. Last year
we painted huge murals depicting school life, and guess who
donated the paint? Cheryl was again helping us and two gleaming
murals now decorate her canteen. On staff social occasions
or major fundraisers, Cheryl is one of the first people to
buy tickets and contribute.
Many people can be coerced into offering donations, but Cheryl's
contribution is quite unique. She is the one coming up with
the philanthropic ideas; she is the one providing the administration
and effort to bring it off and, often, she is the one who
puts her hand in her own pocket to pad out the result.
Then there is the business of running her canteen. Throughout
all of this, she is forever thinking of ways to make the menu
a little better or the range a little wider and more interesting.
All of this happens in a quiet and consultative manner so
as to add to what has always been the great school canteen
which she established. Cheryl is such an asset to our school
and roundly deserves the recognition which your organisation
can bestow upon her."
