"Personal Attributes and Leadership
Kerry is always friendly, engaging and helpful. She ensures
that everything is done with a minimum of fuss and at the
highest level. Kerry relates well to all staff, parents and
students, who all value her contribution and the fantastic
canteen that she operates.
The canteen is both busy and effective, and Kerry runs it
in accordance to all Food Handling rules and processes. The
canteen has been awarded 5 stars for Food Safety by the Glen
Eira Council.
Volunteers who work in the canteen are trained in safe food
handling practices, and these are well documented and displayed
in the canteen.
Canteen Menu
Under Kerry's management the canteen's menu has improved
dramatically. Healthy food choices are constantly being introduced,
and less healthy food eliminated. Kerry has engaged the children's
interest in healthy foods by the innovative way in which she
promotes these items. Kerry also cooks healthy options for
inclusion on the menu, and operates a Milk Shake Monday as
a special healthy treat.
The labelling of food options is interesting and appealing.
Examples of the Summer Menu include:
- Summer Coolers (eg. fresh fruit salad, yoghurt)
- Wicked Wraps and Rolls
- Brain Food Burgers (eg. chicken sub, vegie burger, fisherman's
catch)
- Sumptuous Salad Plates
Examples of the Winter Menu include:
Winter Warmers (eg. vegetable soup) Hearty Hunger Busters
(eg. lasagne, baked potato)
The health benefits of all foods are demonstrated by smiley
faces :
- Sushi

- Milkshake Monday

- Murrumbeena homemade Anzac Cookies

Kerry liaises closely with the school council, advising on
latest canteen guidelines and recommending improvements to
menus as appropriate. The school is proud of our canteen offerings
which emphasise 'Green' food groups and minimise both 'Amber'
and 'Red' groups.
Kerry also caters for visitors to our school at a 'moment's
notice'. On several occasions, she has been asked to provide
lunches or morning teas for visitors without prior notice.
She has the amazing ability to organise a delightful lunch
or morning tea from the canteen in these circumstances, much
to the admiration of the school and visitors alike.
Involvement of the Community in the Canteen
Kerry ensures her friendly weekly newsletter article is happy,
positive and welcoming. She invites helpers with the emphasis
on 'Coffee and Gossip' as well as commenting on school and
local events. Kerry also provides welcome advice to parents
on ways to make lunches more appealing to children. 'Lunch
box ideas' has been a valued addition to her canteen news
section. The number of volunteers has increased under Kerry's
leadership and the canteen has no staffing problems. Of all
areas within the school in which parents may participate,
the canteen is the most popular.
Kerry also ensures the students are interested in the canteen.
As part of her weekly newsletter column, she has introduced
a 'jokes and puzzles' section for the children to complete.
Children also frequently contribute jokes and puzzles of their
own to the canteen section.
Kerry Herschell's contribution has ensured that Murrumbeena
Primary School Canteen is offering the highest standard of
service along with healthy and affordable food choices to
our School Community. I strongly endorse her nomination for
Canteen Manager of the Year."
