"1) Our Volunteer Packs:

"Like most school canteens, we rely on volunteer staff to function and their help is very valuable to the success of our school. We are also expected under our Food Safety Plan to meet strict standards and ensure that our volunteers are up to date with food safety handling and hygiene procedures. The volunteer packs enable us to ensure our workers, whether student, staff or parent/friend of the school, have basic knowledge and skills to help them integrate into the school community and not compromise food safety requirements.

"Our volunteer packs include:

  • a volunteer workers' manual explaining how the canteen operates, the school's healthy eating policy, the food safety plan and OH&S requirement
  • a welcome/thank you card
  • food handling brochures from the Department of Human Services
  • an emergency contact form (we included this after hearing of a school that had a volunteer collapse and they had no record of next of kin or a contact)
  • an orientation checklist that is signed off by volunteer and canteen manager as evidence of training taking place (This enables this training to be documented and stored for evidence if necessary. It is able to be completed quickly and ensures that all requirements have been met.)

"2) Our Pizza Pasta Day:

"The students at MEC love pasta but we don't always get time or have enough volunteers to make it and we came up with the idea of offering a special day where all we have on the menu is pizza or pasta. The students loved our trial of this. We made four different types of pasta: Eggplant and Capsicum, Bolognese, Carbonara, and Oven Baked Tomato and Bacon. We also had BBQ Chicken Pizzas, Hawaiian, Cheese and Bacon, and Vegetarian.

"During winter, we ran this successfully once a week and were able to utilise student helpers to make and freeze sauces. We made the pizzas out of foccacia bread cut in half and baked in our oven. The students enjoyed the variety and we were able to change our menu to suit. Next year, we will be moving to our new school at Balaclava Rd. This will be a huge challenge for us as we will become a prep to twelve school. I am looking forward to using both of these innovations there and also to the creation of many more."
