"Cheryl Savage has been wonderful in terms of responding
to parental expectations, caring for the children and offering
a healthy menu. She is ever willing to meet with parents and
take their views on board. More, she actually puts them into
practice.
"Over the course of her tenure at the school, Cheryl
has revolutionised the menu and replaced boring fatty products
with healthy alternatives. As an example of her offerings,
Cheryl began a pilot program to introduce sushi into the lunch
menu. To the surprise of all, this has become the most popular
product and teachers and children tuck into mountains of sushi
each Wednesday.
"In an attempt to encourage the children to eat fruit,
Cheryl researched the problem and sourced a simple machine
to core and peel apples to transform the humble apple into
something quite exciting. Again, the kids responded by supporting
the initiative.
"Her latest effort sounds quite far fetched but it,
too, is a winner. The kids are offered cauliflower and broccoli
which can be flavoured with a tangy sauce. This, too, has
taken off. Sugar free lollies and natural juice products are
still so popular with kids that one wonders why it has not
been done elsewhere.
"I would hope to have indicated a few important issues
with regard to the management and innovative style of Cheryl
Savage. Firstly she has put the kids' health to the forefront.
Secondly she has been prepared to work with our community
to improve the food on offer. Lastly, and most importantly,
she is still running a popular canteen which offers food which
the kids love. There is not a whiff of the high handedness
which seems to haunt most attempts to improve canteen menus.
This is just a hard working, flexible, innovative operator
who deserves the sort of recognition which your award can
offer."
